Monica first visited Australia in 2006 to research earth pigments and their use by the Aborigines.
The intense light, and the abundance of colours of this geologically very old continent, immediately struck her on arrival. The initial journey has led to annual return travels to Australia, and has inspired Monica to incorporate the Australian land, light, and ocean into her work.
Back in her Amsterdam studio Monica works from sketches, memory, and photographs, to make paintings of the land, the sky, and the ocean, recreating images of specific moments and places.

– those paintings are truly wonderful … and I clicked on one that showed it’s size – really huge! She perfectly captures the light and the colors which are so distinctively Australian. These actually made me miss home! There some close-up photos showing the layers of paint, they must be incredible in person – writes an Australian ex-pat
